the realm of the unreal

Avenge me.

Just saw the Avengers and as a die hard Joss Whedon fanboy I truly enjoyed the movie but my expectations were too high. Sadly it fell short of true greatness and I must defend why the first two X-men movies still take the cake as the best super hero movies ever made.

While the Avengers had an otherworldly bad guy that is evil for no apparent reason with his army of equally static and one sided evil monsters, X-men shows the conflicts between both heroes and humans who all display multidimensional character flaws and virtues. They’re actually fighting for something. Loki just wants to “rule the world” whatever that is suppose to mean. One has to wonder why these other worldly forces are so interested in earth when there are obviously much better planets to conquer in the universe. Earth is polluted, drained, full of smelly fat humans, and pretty tiny as far as space rocks go. Our suspension of disbelief becomes more and more difficult as the movie goes on whereas in X-men one feels a real sense of relevancy and all too familiar knowledge of humanity’s history of discrimination against out groups. Magneto is not evil just for the sake of it. We can even sympathize. The scene depicting the birth of Magneto’s ability amidst the atrocities of Nazi Germany is possibly one of the most powerful scenes in the superhero genre. There was nothing like that in the Avengers, just amusing one liners. While both movies did a good job balancing large casts with various super powers, X-men was profound and relevant while the Avengers was just fun. Both were entertaining and cutting edge for their respective times but X-men didn’t rely as much on CGI to make a truly unique addition to film and not just the genre.
